What is the most deadly case of acid rain?

I have seen the pollution in Nitro West Virginia when the sky was raining sulphuric acid. This sort of thing was fairly common up until the 1960’s in the Northeastern area of the USA. I know that such things did environmental damages over a long time. I am glad it ended. I really don’t know of it killing any individual thing but it was pretty damaging to pavement, buildings and cars. I presume it was toxic to animals and plants to some extent.

Acid rain isn’t fatal to people, but it is fatal to vegetation. Most plants can’t grow in acidic soils.Up here in Canada, the “poster child” for acid rain was the greater Sudbury area in northern Ontario. Sudbury is the center of gold, nickel and copper mining in Canada, and a lot of the ore concentrate is smelted there. The smelters gave off huge amounts of sulfur dioxide.

As such, most of Sudbury resembled the moon up until the 1980s when they put scrubbers on the smelting stacks. The old strategy was to keep making the chimneys taller so that the smoke would be spread over a larger area, but that just made the problem worse. People who lived in Sudbury didn’t know that it used to be a heavily forested area (most of the trees were cut down for lumber before mining became a big thing)

In addition to cutting back on emissions, the people of Sudbury have been busy spreading lime (an alkaline material that restores the pH of the soil) and planting new trees.
